Applications for Fellow (FBILD)

(Individual membership)

Please read the information below carefully. If you wish to proceed with an application for Fellow (FBILD) status, please contact the BILD office: 0117 9596517 to discuss the application process with a member of staff first.

A Fellowship is awarded to members who have demonstrated significant individual responsibility, sustained achievement and exceptional professionalism during their careers. Fellowship is the highest status conferred by the Institute and is a measure of the contribution to the learning and development profession by the holder. Becoming a Fellow of the Institute proves that you have reached the pinnacle of your profession. Fellows are entitled to use the designatory letters FBILD after their name.

Entry to this level requires a minimum of five year’s experience in a senior learning and/or development role, commitment to BILD Code of Conduct, a reference from a current client or manager, and a letter of support from an existing Fellow of the Institute. This grade recognises those with a Level 5 TAP Diploma or a specified Level 5 alternative including NVQ, City & Guilds, 7305-20 City and Guilds Diploma. A post-graduate degree in a relevant subject will also be recognised.

All Institute Fellows are required to adhere to the standards and responsibilities contained in the BILD’s Code of Conduct. Fellows are expected to actively promote the Institute wherever and whenever the opportunity arises, to recruit and help to retain existing Institute members and to support the work of the Institute at all times.

Due to the prestigious nature of the Fellowship category, applications are considered individually. Applications are first screened to make sure they reach the required standards and then passed onto the Membership Committee for further evaluation. Once the committee has passed the application the application will then be passed to the BILD Board of Directors, where the award of Fellowship status is approved or deferred. Reasons for deferral will always be given so when reapplying for Fellowship grade, applicants will know what will be expected of them.

Applications for Fellowship of the BILD should be made in writing to the Business Manager. Applicants should outline, in approximately 500 words, a précis of their achievements in the field of learning and development, indicating how they have demonstrated significant individual responsibility, sustained achievement and exceptional professionalism during their careers. Applicants should also attach a letter of recommendation, signed by an existing Fellow of BILD.

Occasionally the BILD Board of Directors may elect Fellows to the Institute who they have considered have made a significant contribution to learning and development within the UK or internationally.
